Hi,
Just thought I'd better check before I end up spending juhannus in the police station...
Is it ok (legal) to shoot a bow in your own back garden in Finland? Or at your summer cottage? Is there any requirements or rules or anything?
Also, what about hunting, is it ok to shoot hares...or do you need a license or anything like that?
Thanks! |

Depends on the back garden you have . Common sense solutions usually work well out in Finland.
About hunting: You either need Finnish hunting license or a license that is accepted by the Finnish authorities. Hunting in Finland is limited to the land you own or to the land you have been given permit to hunt. Finnish government owns a lot of land in the northern Finland, and they sell licenses to hunt there.
During Juhannus most species are off season.
Hare/rabbit season in Finland is between: 1.9.?29.2.
More information is available from: Suomen riistakeskus and Villi pohjola web pages.

You can freely practice archery in your own yard as long as the use does not danger other people.

You will need a hunting license as rabbits are hares are regarded as game animals in Finland. The bow also must draw at least 180 newtons. The game season for hare is from 1 March to 31 August. Unprotected animals can be shot in one's own land without a license. |

180N is 40.5 lbs in the way bows are usually.
Crossbow huntiting is forbidden. |
